The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in the city of Weimar by German architect Walter Gropius (1883–1969).
The Bauhaus was one of the pioneering design school’s. In many ways it is similar to first year design at victoria. Bauhaus combined designers and craftsman into the same environment. They were taught a wide range of design aspects in a course called Vorkous which gave them a taste and the basics of different area’s of design to educate them.
This is the same in the first year of design at victoria. All designers from media and industrial background are taught elements of design from computer modelling(104) to history of the arts(171) to hands on experimentation of materials(101,141). This was the an idea of Gropius. To teach design in a way it had not been taught before, combining the arts and teaching a diverse range of skills.
The first year design course like The Vorkous course was manditory before moving into specialised areas such as metalworking, textiles, furniture and painting.
